This is not a motivational pamphlet. It is a field manual — seven sequenced rules covering every phase of a canvass: the walk from the car, the knock, the conversation, the ask, the data, and the debrief.

The goal is not more doors. The goal is more useful doors — better conversations, cleaner data, stronger asks, wiser follow-up, safer teams, and a field culture that knows why it exists.

For the Door

A rule is not a substitute for judgment — it's a guardrail. Something a volunteer can hold onto when he is tired, nervous, rejected, or rushed. Tap any rule to expand it.

Know Why You're There
Describe in one sentence why you're heading out to knock today.

Establishes the mission. The campaign's phase decides the day's purpose — identify, persuade, register, recruit, or turn out. If you can't explain the day's goal, your canvassers won't know why they're there either.

Stand Up Tall & Keep Your Head Straight
Presence and bearing decide the first three seconds at the door.

Body language, footing, and the way you speak are read before a word lands. A timid canvasser wastes the voter's time; an arrogant one disrespects it. The goal is honest presence — confident enough to be trusted, humble enough to listen.

The voter decides whether to keep listening before you finish your first sentence.

Smile When You Can; When You Can't, Mourn
Rejection, composure, and the emotional discipline of the route.

Most doors don't open, and some that do are angry. This rule is about matching the voter's mood honestly, recovering from belligerent doors, and debriefing the hard ones so they don't follow you to the next house.

Composure is a skill, not a temperament — and it can be trained.

Drink Water & Wear a Hat
Physical preparation, safety, and readiness in the field.

You can't knock the last door of a hot Saturday if you didn't prepare for the first. Dress for the work, optimize your phone and walkbook, hydrate, and run a pre-shift checklist. Readiness is a discipline, not an afterthought.

The route punishes everyone who treats preparation as optional.

Always End on a Question
Turning a conversation into an action the voter actually takes.

A pleasant chat is not a result. Every door should close with an ask — a vote plan, a registration, a sign, a volunteer lead — and a clear next step. And you need an answer for when they say "no."

Support does not become power on its own. It has to be pushed into action.

Recruit, Reward, Retain
How to build a field team — and how to keep it.

One organizer can't knock a district. Growing canvassers, incentivizing them honestly, training and retaining them, and handling troublesome knockers is what turns a person into a program before the final sprint.

A field program that survives on one hero in July collapses in October.

Stick to the Script
Message discipline, clean data, and campaign control.

Write a plan, follow the plan, amend the plan when needed. Going off script muddies the data and breaks message discipline. Small errors repeated across hundreds of conversations become unusable data — and bad data is the first step toward an electoral loss.

If a thing is not measured, it cannot be improved.

"Just Go Knock" Is Not Training

Young operatives deserve more than vague encouragement. Telling someone to "just go knock" is not training. Telling a nervous volunteer to "just be confident" is not coaching. Telling a paid canvasser to "just get better numbers" is not healthy leadership.

Most political work is not glamorous. It is week-old lists, worn-out clipboards, buggy apps, hot plastic water bottles, awkward conversations, locked gates, bad weather, tired volunteers, and one more door after the last one.

This book is about all of it — the preparation before the first knock, the composure at the door, the discipline to follow the script when you're exhausted, and the culture that makes a field program survivable past October. It comes from doing the work. Every rule in it was forged on a route.

Mateo Tomas Portelli

Political Strategist · Cybersecurity Professional · Army Officer

Mateo Portelli is a political strategist, cybersecurity professional, and Army officer. He began his political career at 18 as a Nevada Republican Party Field Organizer and later served as Nevada State Director of the NRSC's Operación ¡Vamos! — the largest Republican Hispanic field engagement program ever run nationwide.

For his work during the 2022 cycle he received the NRSC Champion for Freedom Medal and national recognition from the Republican National Committee as a Republican Party Rising Star. He has worked across campaign field operations, grassroots activism, Latino and Gen Z outreach, fundraising, and public policy.

In Nevada, he was appointed three times by Governor Joe Lombardo to the Nevada Supreme Court's Judicial Selection Commission and the Attorney General's Technological Crime Advisory Board, and by Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar to the inaugural Youth Advisory Task Force. A proud UNLV alumnus and his Class of 2025 commencement speaker, he is pursuing an M.S. in Cybersecurity at Old Dominion University.
